The $1.5 Million Baptism: Rethinking Kingdom ROI
A few months ago I had the privilege of having lunch with many of the church planting leaders in Central Texas as we discussed better ways to reach our region with the good news. During the conversation one leader shared a staggering statement that caught us all off guard:
"Did you guys know that churches in the United States spend an average of $1.5 million per baptism? There has to be a more effective way to do ministry."
Immediately everyone at the table stopped and asked the same question: "Is that really true?" The leader went on to say that it was indeed true, citing research done at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Center for the Study of Global Christianity by David B. Barrett and Todd M. Johnson.
It is a statistic that stops you in your tracks—not because the value of a soul can be measured in dollars, but because it reveals a profound systemic challenge in how modern ministry resources are allocated and utilized.
